The Robinson family would like to extend their condolences to the Snarr and Simmonds families! There are no words to express our sadness. If anyone would like to share additional stories about our brothers, please send to my email address below. I can also share with the Simmonds and Snarr families.

It is with heavy hearts we extend our sincere condolences to the families of Ken, Peter and Patrick.

Speaking on behalf of my small family of 3 at VIA – I am an engineer, my daughter works on board and my son-in-law is an engineer in training – we try to take nothing for granted. Yet, when one walks out the door to work, we do expect them to return home safely. This unbelievable tragedy has struck us all in our extended VIA family and all of our sympathies are with you.

There are so many thoughts, so much to say…..yet words fail.

To live in hearts we leave behind, is not to die.

    To Patrick’s son and daughter,
Your dad was assigned to train with me on the Toronto to Montreal corridor. He was the ideal student. He was prepared for every trip, knew what was required and was very professional at what he did.
During our down time in Montreal he often talked about you guys. He would get upset when he tried to read or send an email but couldn’t because of a poor signal. It was very obvious that he missed you both, was very proud of you both and loved you both very much. I just want you to know that we here at VIA not only lost a colleague but those lives that he touched including mine lost a friend and we grieve with you.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.
    GOD BLESS.

Patrick Robinson. Ken Simmonds, Peter Snaar
I am saddenned by the loss of my colleagues in this tragic event. I interacted with Ken several years ago looking at hotels for crews in Windsor and in Niagara Falls and he was as nice a person one will ever meet.

Not having worked with Patrick or Peter, I think , however, that they would have the same spirit and commitment as Ken.

My thoughts are with the family and colloegues who will miss them but will treasure the memories.

To the families and colleagues of Ken Simmonds, Peter Snarr and Patrick Robinson, my sincere condolences. I know that these men would have done everything in their power to ensure the safe operation of their locomotive and the safety of their passengers. Unfortunately, tragic accidents sometimes occur without warning or explanation. While no explanation will ease the pain of your loss, I hope that the memories of good times spent together will give you some comfort.

So long Pete! Glad to have a chance to talk to you back in June 3rd 2011. We briefly rehashed the times we had in Gimli back in Jan 1986 to Feb. 1986. You were an excellent pool player and I loved having a few with you at the ‘viking’. I was hoping for you to eventually retire and move to Windsor…where housing is cheap and you can play golf and fish for a longer time period here. This should not have been happened. May God Bless you…see you at the gates of the final terminal!

The Last Spike! The moment when the East Coast and the West Coast was linked together. That was not the only thing that was linked together. The engineers, station, on train services, services and customers were linked together. Sunday February 26, 2012 we lost three of our commrades, and the world was watching on as our family was grieving. The pain that our
engineering family and it’s co-workers are feeling hurts beyond compare. Are there words for this? We are there for the families who lost their Fathers, Uncles, Brothers,Sisters,Cousins, Friends and Neighbours.

As we struggle to make sense of this tragedy, we are only left with broken hearts and fond memories . . .

Although neither one of us had the pleasure of working with Peter, he always met us with a warm smile and a quiet confidence. His kindness was felt by all.
We both had worked with Ken. An intelligent man with a witty sense of humour. He was meticulous in his duties, and his smile was always followed by a wonderful story.
Unfortunately, neither one of us had worked with Patrick, but all that did, unanimously agreed his future was bright and he rose above his class. His engaging smile made it a pleasure to have met him.

As profound as our sorrow is, their smiles will forever warm our hearts.

    VIA Train 92
They departed Niagara Falls on Train 92,
Bound for Toronto before the days through,
The usal trip with dangers all up ahead,
And nobody knew the crew would be dead.

From the moment a brake lever releases the air,
And the throttle pushed forward slowly with care,
As the train gains speed it gets tougher to stop,
That’s where fear and all danger are caught.

Hung in this balance of power the train rolls along,
The daily runs pass and nothing goes wrong,
With signals and orders a safe operation prevails,
The scheduled stops and with the usual details.

Suddenly, we join the book of death and disaster,
Gone is the crew, where once there was laughter,
Condolences and prayers said for friends and crew,
As we remeber the Burlington wreck of Train 92.

To the families of Locomotive Engineers: Mr. Snarr, Mr. Simmonds and Mr. Robinson:

I am truly sorry and saddened by your loss. My heart is also broken as I lost three of my ‘men’ in my department. By working daily with the Locomotive Engineers’ group one can not help but develop a close and respectful relationship with them. The Booking In room is a den where we work daily and affords me the opportunity to talk and appreciate the human and personal side of my colleagues.

I remember Mr. Simmonds as he frequently used to visit me upstairs bringing me work sent by the Manager from Niagara Falls. He would start by saying “How is Tere today?” and he would proceed to make himself comfortable in the waiting room and write his Time Reports. I noted his forms were very precise. We used to chat about just anything. That is the way I remember him casual, friendly and down to earth.

Mr. Snarr, was witty with a dry sense of humour. He was a nice gentleman smiling with sometimes a mischievous look. I got to know him better through the eyes and anecdotes of his former mate Rick.

I had the opportunity to work with Mr. Robinson only for a short period of time. He joined VIA near the end of 2011. He was a very handsome and smart young man, his positive and professional attitude…

In denial. Still thinking it must be a dream – only a bad dream. I knew Ken and Pete. I’ve worked with them many times over the past 30 years.
“Petey.” I always called him Petey. I remember his wit and scathing sarcasm from our days together at Mac Yard. I laugh when I think about it. In the next breath, I cry.
Uncle Kenny was another one with whom I often laughed. He wasn’t my uncle, of course. We’re about the same age. But he seemed to me like a man I’d love to have for an uncle – kindly, playful, friendly, open. Kenny was always smiling. It was as if he had something wonderful to tell you, or something hilarious. I will always remember that smile.
I did not know Patrick. I saw him though, at the hotel in Windsor. It was just last Friday. He was tall. Handsome. His orange safety vest was still new, still clean. The three of them entered the lobby together. I said hello to the men I knew, but I did not introduce myself to their trainee. I’m sorry, Patrick. (Do they call you Pat?) I wish I’d made the effort. I wish I’d known you. And I’m so sorry you’re all gone. It’s beyond my understanding. But you’re in God’s care now, free of all earthly concerns. We promise always to run the trains in a way that respects your memory. Surely, we’ll meet again one day…
